IMASUS at the Disruptive Materials Institute: Reimagining Sustainable Fashion from the Ground Up

In April 2025, the opening event of the Disruptive Materials Institute, a new platform dedicated to exploring innovation in textiles, tools, and biomaterials. The two-day exhibition took place at the KuLe Gallery in Berlin and was immersive by design, featuring experimental works and forward-looking research from across Europe—IMASUS was proud to be among the presented contributions.

Through an interactive installation and public presentation, we joined a cohort of practitioners whose work is challenging entrenched norms in material culture. The exhibition space became a place for open inquiry, where the lifecycle of materials, the systems that produce them, and the social contexts they shape were all up for reexamination.

The presentation of the newly launched IMASUS website shared space with projects exploring everything from fungal-based dyeing methods to digitally automated manufacturing processes, all aligned by a shared commitment to sustainability and systemic change. What emerged was a clear signal: innovation isn’t just about new materials, but about rethinking relationships—between tools and tradition, production and practice, knowledge and access.

Being part of the Institute’s launch offered a unique opportunity to situate our work within a broader ecosystem of material innovation. It also sparked vital cross-sector conversations—between researchers, makers, policy shapers, and educators—on how to scale alternative practices in ways that are both resilient and equitable.

More than just a showcase, the event embodied the very disruptions it promoted. And for us, it reaffirmed the importance of grounding sustainable fashion not only in what we make, but in how we collaborate, communicate, and carry ideas forward.

As IMASUS continues to evolve through shared research and practical engagement, we’re excited to keep building momentum with partners and peers who are ready to imagine—and engineer—a better material future.
